What Product Should I Use?

When making your choice between a one component and two component system, you need to consider the following three points.

  1. If the existing coating is a two component coating then you should use a two component coating when repainting.
  2. Spray application gives the best finish for both single and two component products.
  3. The balance between initial product cost and coating system performance and durability.

Summary

Two component coatings have better performance and durability characteristics. They have a longer service life and give better resistance to the marine environment, wear and tear, fuels and solvents.

Two component primer and undercoat costs are comparable with single component while two component topcoats have a higher initial cost than single component topcoats.

The following four pages give an outline of the substrates types (steel, wood, GRP etc.) with suggested Altex Yacht & Boat Paint one and two component marine paint systems. It should be noted that these are basic guides only and illustrate the coating sequences but not necessarily the number of coats of each
product to be used or the dry film thicknesses required.
